Rhodanese (thiosulfate: cyanide sulfur transferase, EC 2.8.1.1) catalyzes the cleavage of the sulfur bound of thiosulfate to from sulfur and sulfite. The enzyme was crystallized from ox liver by Sorbo and from beef kidney by Westley and Green. It has been found in a variety of bacterial species including Chromatium, several species of Thiobacillus (1-3,11-13), Escherichia coli,m Rhodospirillum rubrum, and Rhodopseudomonas spheroides. Suggested functions for this enzyme were cyanide detoxification, thiosulfate-cleaving activity in the initial steps of thiosulfate oxidation, and its participation during assimilatory thiosulfate reduction involving lipoic acid. |
